This is my must-have list of 25 Free Softwares and Utilities that I use as an installation checklist on every fresh Windows installation. After these are installed, Windows is much more stable and powerful.

These apps and utilities are my top picks as most essential to install on every Windows PC. These programs allow Windows to operate more securely, making the system more reliable, which helps me complete my work easily and effectively. I have listed them in alphabetical order.

When I was born I was so shocked I didn't speak for a year and half...... My brain has 2 parts, Right and Left, The Right one has nothing left in it and the Left one has nothing right in it...... Who says Nothing is Impossible?? I've been doing nothing for years......
    • really nice
    • Nice, most of them I used
    • great collection, this is good for me as i am planning to upgrade to windows 7
    • Unlocker will not work with Windows7 :(
    • This article has been shared on favSHARE.net. Go and vote it!

Good list though a few things..
I prefer 7-zip for my extracting and compressing, you're hard pressed to find a compressed file that you can't extract with it. www.7-zip.org
For a Photoshop replacement, I use gimp. It takes some getting used to, but is pretty cool once you get the hang of it. www.gimp.org
For my notepad replacement, I use Jarte. It's quite small, and has a lot of features in a compressible menu like spell check, word count, and pop up special characters (Such as ™©®). www.jarte.com
For my replacement for windows media player, winamp. Quite customizable, good media library and great visualizations. www.winamp.com
And last but not least, a sort of replacement for the default clock. I've always thought the text on it was way too small. I found alfaclock. You can customize the font, size, color, and what's displayed (which formats, such as instead of the default for the date, mine shows "Monday, November 02, 09" Including optional and/or additional military time). And, it also has an alarm/alert feature. www.alfasoftweb.com/alfaclock/
    • I had not heard of Jarte - I use notepad ++ as well at Note Tab Pro. They both have great features.
    • izazueta
I previously used Daemon Tools but because now it installed spyware, I prefer MagicISO, secondly I use Ashampoo Burning Studio 6 Free as a replacement to Nero
    • Kingamo
yah Jarte sucks. I just tried it and it took several seconds to load on a very fast laptop. I'm sticking to NotePad++.
    • psdeluxe
Thanks, Bariski. I get some new software's that I need to install :)
    • jefzapata
      Thanks for the list
    • Arsen
Nice list, most of this stuff I already have installed. For mp3's i recommend Foobar - small, efficient, powerful.
    • Nice list.. I have most of the softwares listed here..
    • johnsonkoh
Very useful information here buddy! :D
    • Thanks for the great downloads, we hope to put on our website http://www.studentbrands.co.za
    • --Digsby. It's full of adware since last version
Use Trillian or Miranda or even better the webbased meebo.com or imo.im
    • Digsby
That's just a lie. Digsby has absolutely no ad-ware
    • Jim
Advanced System Care Free and IObit Security 360.
    • David Boring
I prefer µTorrent to Vuze. It's less flashy looking, but smaller, lighter and more configurable.
    • Robert
This is an okay list. thanks. I'm left to wonder how some missed the cut, like 7-Zip, Pidgin and uTorrent. I suppose if you have to pick one... Then again, there are two browsers in this list-three total on Windows when installed.
    • Hi buddy, I included a alternative for 7-Zip as Universal Extractor and for Pidgin -> Digsby and Vuze for utorrent. And Firefox is picked for it has so many addons making it more powerful but, a memory leak also, and Chrome for it being the fastest.
    • Very interest and most are widely known.
    • Peter
I like your selection of programs, also your sense of humor
    • stan
      7-zip?!
    • Universal extractor instead of that.
    • lanecia

    • Oh my man, see who is here. :D Thanks so much for the reply birdie, missing ya lot! See ya soon.
    • avn
      CCleaner.
    • 7 zip should be on this list
    • Aerofoil..WOT.. PeerBlock..SpybotS&D...Microsoft Security Essentials.. Hostsman...
    • Romanian Guy
Missed the greatest Video Player: GOM
    • Toz
      Great list !
I would say Orbit Downloader instead of Flashget, Ashampoo Burning Studio Free instead of Imgburn.
    • uTorrent is far better than Vuze...Faster, Smaller, Better UI, lov it.
    • I still use XP 5 days a week at work. This is a pretty solid list, but switch the following:

      1) Flashget - I personally like DownThemAll, but this is probably just personal preference.
      2) Foxit Reader - A year ago, I would have said this is the .pdf reader to use, but it's become bloated, and Sumatra or PDF-XChange are smaller/faster
      3) ImgBurn - A great program, but CDBurnerXP is just as adept and even more lightweight (and despite the name, works on XP/Vista/Win7)
      4) K-Lite - Good, but CCCP is superior

      Otherwise, pretty solid.
    • Cool article.

Very cool app for Win - VirtualWin - if you need more than one workspace. I need 10 ;)
Here I wrote few notes about app: http://georgik.sinusgear.com/2009/11/06/konecne...

      Program is available at: http://virtuawin.sourceforge.net
    • santhosh
