  • Most Essential Free Softwares After Windows Installation
  • As a Windows lover, I have always tried to make it more secure, convenient and easy to use. This is my must-have list of 25 Free Softwares and Utilities that I use as an installation checklist on every fresh Windows installation. After these are installed, Windows is much more stable and powerful.

These apps and utilities are my top picks as most essential to install on every Windows PC. These programs allow Windows to operate more securely, making the system more reliable, which helps me complete my work easily and effectively. I have listed them in alphabetical order.

    Avira AntiVir Personal Edition

aviraConsistently at or near the top of independent efficacy testers, Avira’s AntiVir remains one of the best freeware security solutions around. Its scans are flexible, allowing the user to fully scan both internal and external hard drives, run a preloaded scan–for rootkits, for example–or customize a scan.

    CCleaner

ccleanerCCleaner is a freeware system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool. It removes unused files from your system – allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. Additionally it contains a fully featured registry cleaner.

    Comodo Firewall

comodo-firewallComodo has merged its antivirus program with Firewall Pro, creating a free security program that aims to be more to more people. Although this may frustrate some users who want only one program or the other, the installer does let you opt out of either of the components.

    Digsby

digsbyDigsby helps you manage all your IM, e-mail, and social network accounts from one easy-to-use application. Digsby lets you chat with all your friends on AIM, MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, Google Talk, Facebook Chat, and Jabber with one simple to manage buddy list. It provides notifications when new e-mails arrive.

    DAEMON Tools Lite

daemontoolsDAEMON Tools is an advanced application for Microsoft Windows which provides one of the best optical media emulation in the industry. With DAEMON Tools you can back up your physical CD/DVD/HD DVD/Blu-ray discs into “virtual discs” or so called “disc image” files, which run directly on your hard drive. You can also work with images created by other burning programs! DAEMON Tools supports variety of image types.

    Everything search engine

everythingsearchengineThis small software application bypasses Windows search with a lightning quick interface and real-time results for all of the files and folders in your local hard drive or any subsection of it. flashgetFlashGet is specifically designed to address two of the biggest problems when downloading files: Speed and management of downloaded files.

    Foxit Reader

foxitreaderTo put it gently, Adobe Reader is a real pain in the hindquarters. It’s monstrously large, slow to load, and includes many features most users will hardly ever need. Foxit PDF Reader 3.0 kills the bloat and throws in some useful features, such as multimedia support and content-sharing options, while still allowing you to quickly access your PDFs.

    Google Chrome

    VideoLAN VLC media player

vlcVLC is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats, including MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, MP3, and OGG, as well as for DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. Good list though a few things..
I prefer 7-zip for my extracting and compressing, you’re hard pressed to find a compressed file that you can’t extract with it. http://www.7-zip.org
For a Photoshop replacement, I use gimp. It takes some getting used to, but is pretty cool once you get the hang of it. http://www.gimp.org
For my notepad replacement, I use Jarte. It’s quite small, and has a lot of features in a compressible menu like spell check, word count, and pop up special characters (Such as ™©®). http://www.jarte.com
For my replacement for windows media player, winamp. Quite customizable, good media library and great visualizations. http://www.winamp.com
And last but not least, a sort of replacement for the default clock. I’ve always thought the text on it was way too small. I found alfaclock. You can customize the font, size, color, and what’s displayed (which formats, such as instead of the default for the date, mine shows “Monday, November 02, 09″ Including optional and/or additional military time). And, it also has an alarm/alert feature. http://www.alfasoftweb.com/alfaclock/

And last but not least, a sort of replacement for the default clock. I've always thought the text on it was way too small. I found alfaclock. You can customize the font, size, color, and what's displayed (which formats, such as instead of the default for the date, mine shows “Monday, November 02, 09″ Including optional and/or additional military time). And, it also has an alarm/alert feature. http://www.alfasoftweb.com/alfaclock/

I prefer 7-zip for my extracting and compressing, you're hard pressed to find a compressed file that you can't extract with it. http://www.7-zip.org

Hi buddy, I included a alternative for 7-Zip as Universal Extractor and for Pidgin -> Digsby and Vuze for utorrent. And Firefox is picked for it has so many addons making it more powerful but, a memory leak also, and Chrome for it being the fastest.

This is an okay list. thanks. I'm left to wonder how some missed the cut, like 7-Zip, Pidgin and uTorrent. I suppose if you have to pick one… Then again, there are two browsers in this list-three total on Windows when installed.

Hi buddy, I included a alternative for 7-Zip as Universal Extractor and for Pidgin -> Digsby and Vuze for utorrent. And Firefox is picked for it has so many addons making it more powerful but, a memory leak also, and Chrome for it being the fastest.

I still use XP 5 days a week at work. This is a pretty solid list, but switch the following:

      1) Flashget – I personally like DownThemAll, but this is probably just personal preference.
      2) Foxit Reader – A year ago, I would have said this is the .pdf reader to use, but it's become bloated, and Sumatra or PDF-XChange are smaller/faster
      3) ImgBurn – A great program, but CDBurnerXP is just as adept and even more lightweight (and despite the name, works on XP/Vista/Win7)
      4) K-Lite – Good, but CCCP is superior

      Otherwise, pretty solid.

Anyone have a free alternative to the desktop organizer WinTidy (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,17748,00.a… Hasn't been updated since 2002!

There was also a little utility that showed the size (in KBs or MBs) of folders in the right pane of Windows Explorer. Does anyone know where I can find it?

Thanks for sharing this information with us. What ever you mention software are essential. If you don't have this software then your PC is of no use. What I suggest here is that make use of trusted site or software's has authenticate password. They come with warranty period and are of good quality. Also they do not produce any kind of harm to computer.

Well.. i agrre with you on most, and i have to say that Notepad++ does a better job than Jarte that someone speciffied in one of the comments.
And i have to add that you don't actually need K-Lite Mega Codec Pack if you have VLC installed. And also, that a good replacement for VLC can be the MPlayer from http://www.mplayerhq.hu .
Google Chrome — is a BIG No! .. it opens so many processes (GoogleUpdater.exe, GoogleCrashHandler.exe, google.. blah.. blah.. .exe) and for every tab, it starts a new chrome.exe process .. this program is just a HUGE Hole in your system resources.
Avira, CCleaner and KomodoFirewall can all be replaced by AVG Free.. and from my experience AVG alone does a better job at protecting your PC than those programs together.
The Digsby and Everything search engine .. totally useless programs, at lest in my experience. Well.. Digsby may be usefull if you really use more than 2-3 chat programs .. but a better option is Pidgin or Trillian (personally, i just use the default chat programs..). Anyway.. this is a personal option alone. The everything search engine .. well.. if you really need it.. may be usefull.. but i installed it and keep it on my PC for 3 months without a single use…

Anyway .. as a side note:

You can spare the ~30 mins on installing windows + more than 60 minutes to get your updates + 10 to 60 minutes installing or downloading and installing or updating drivers for your devices that windoes didn't recognized (i know.. this happens in very rare occasions since Win7, but it sux when it happens) and another 30-60 mins to install custom software that will replace what you didn't like in Windows .. ( that's a total of 2 hours up to 3 hours and 30 minutes or even more in some cases) by just installing a GNU/Linux distribution, like Ubuntu. 20-30 minutes installation, about 10 minutes setting it up, maybe another 30 minutes to get some updates… a lot of time saved.
And more than that, you decide what is installed on your PC, not Microsoft. Update packages have comprehensive names, not criptyc codes (e.g. QU343325 ..wtf is that ?? ), you don't have to spend 170USD to get it, but just ~0,25 USD for a CD/DVD blank and 10 minutes of your time to download it and burn it on that blank CD/DVD. You can choose to get free support (just by asking in forums) or payd support.. and even so it cost's you alor less than using Microsoft products.
And no, linux is not a command line operating system.. unless you choose so.
I'm not an linux fanatic. I use both Windows and Linux at work and at home. Both are usefull in theyr own way. But when it comes to costs+stability+usability .. alltogether GNU/Linux always won. And if someones tells you that you can't play Games on Linux, just send that person to take a look at http://www.winehq.com ..

My 3 years old son plays he's puzzle games on linux. My wife use windows, just because she doesn't wanna use something else.. I use both, windows and linux ( not only one distro.. i use Ubuntu, Fedora Core, Slackware, CentOS at work, )

      Have fun, whatever you decide.
